Gender-based violence (GBV) investigations

Gender-based violence (GBV) investigations vary in complexity and can be done with different levels of formality. Investigative teams must identify the form of violence and the risk factors that are present in the individual case so they can effectively address the issue and determine what steps need to be taken to help the victim. For formal investigations, teams should use legal, forensic, and investigative tools to identify the elements of a crime, the evidence, and the perpetrator. In addition, they should conduct interviews with the victim, witnesses, and other relevant persons, as well as collect physical and biological evidence. Teams should also seek to establish patterns of behavior that are indicative of a pattern of violence that may exist in the relationship.

Investigations into Gender-based violence can be hindered by victims’ unwillingness to cooperate or seek help. In order to encourage victims to come forward, law enforcement agencies should ensure that victims are aware of the services available to them and the process involved from investigation to prosecution.
